Residents of Druzhba 2 Discussed Neighbourhood Issues in an Open Dialogue with the District Mayor

On 29 October, a public discussion entitled “The Voice of Druzhba 2” was held at Iskar Cultural Centre, with the participation of Petko Kraev, Mayor of Iskar District and Deputy Mayor Boris Tsvetkov. The meeting was moderated by political scientist Lyubomir Stefanov and provided residents with an opportunity to speak openly about the neighbourhood’s problems, seek specific information and discuss possible solutions directly with those responsible for local administration.
“For the first time, there is this level of transparency. You can come and have a direct conversation with the mayor.” These words captured the importance of giving residents of Druzhba 2 the opportunity to raise their concerns with the district administration and receive answers in person. Key topics included the shortage of parking spaces, the condition of streets and shared residential areas and the development of the urban environment. The discussion also addressed plans to build a new kindergarten with a capacity of 280 children, as well as differing views among residents on how the site should be used. Questions were also raised about planned high-rise construction, the structural condition of residential buildings and opportunities to expand existing car parks.
The discussion also covered the expropriation of properties around Druzhba Lake, the removal of abandoned vehicles and the challenges involved in addressing infrastructure problems. Representatives of the district administration outlined some of the ongoing activities and priorities for the area, including educational infrastructure, kindergartens and playgrounds.
The meeting highlighted the importance of transparency, access to information and opportunities for citizens to engage directly with local authorities. When people can ask questions in person, express their views and receive answers, dialogue becomes a meaningful way to participate in decisions that affect their everyday lives.
The public discussion is part of the project “Together for Iskar District: Participation, Dialogue and Solutions”, implemented with the financial support of Sofia Municipality – Europe 2026 Program by the Bulgarian School of Politics “Dimitry Panitza”, in partnership with Iskar District and the “Elin Pelin – 1926” Community Centre in Busmantsi.
